The NuMBerS project is in some ways the precursor to the current SUMS initiative. It was designed to underpin the teaching of numerical methods for the biosciences. Currently, the NuMBerS site (http://www.anglia.ac.uk/numbers) contains around 30 resources, grouped into three main areas.

Basic Numerical Skills addresses a range of areas, including powers, logarithms, algebraic expressions and equation solving. This part of the NuMBerS resources forms the springboard for the SUMS project.

Functions and Models covers simple mathematical functions used in biosciences, including exponential, logistic, hyperbolic and quadratic.

Biostatistics includes a range of statistical tests used commonly in biosciences at undergraduate level. It is based on, and complements, the Oxford University Press textbook Biomeasurement, written by Dawn Hawkins of Anglia Ruskin Department of Life Sciences.

The project has been supported financially by the Higher Education Academy Centre for Bioscience and by Anglia Ruskin University. The project team comprises Dawn Hawkins, Toby Carter and Jacqui McCary (Anglia Ruskin Faculty of Science and Technology) and Philippa and Julian Priddle (Science Training & Education Partnership).
